Doctor of Physical Therapy Training at PCOM Georgia

The Physical Therapy Education Center at PCOM Georgia is a modern, 12,000-square-foot facility dedicated to training doctors of physical therapy (DPT).

The center, located on our Suwanee, Georgia campus, houses multiple laboratories and classrooms as well as state-of-the-art physical therapy equipment. Our learning spaces will equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to work in a variety of care settings including hospitals, schools and sports organizations.

CENTER DETAILS

The Neuromusculoskeletal Lab is a dynamic learning space that replicates the environment of a modern physical therapy clinic and supports both classroom instruction and clinical learning. Faculty regularly host pro bono patient sessions in the lab, giving students valuable hands-on experience with real patients.

The space is equipped for instruction in managing musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. Students develop essential clinical skills using tools like parallel bars, a convertible staircase, weights, resistance bands and exercise balls. Therapeutic modalities such as hot/cold packs and traction units are also available.

Cardiopulmonary training is supported by treadmills, bicycle ergometers, and specialized equipment. The Biodex Gait Trainer™ provides visual and auditory feedback to support gait retraining and features a music therapy module designed to help patients with Parkinson’s Disease. An unweighting system allows for partial body-weight support during ambulation training.

To assess and treat balance and mobility issues, the lab includes a Bertec computerized balance system with diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, along with a 16-foot walkway and motion analysis software to evaluate gait patterns. Select equipment is portable and may be used for community outreach and off-site patient care.

The Physical Therapy Department features two large 40-seat instructional classrooms and one multi-purpose classroom designed to support both lecture and hands-on learning. The larger classrooms are furnished with adjustable treatment tables, allowing a smooth transition from lecture to lab activities. All rooms are equipped with movable furniture to accommodate a wide range of teaching formats and group configurations.

State-of-the-art instructional technology enhances the learning experience. A ceiling-mounted, movable demonstration camera allows faculty to broadcast hands-on techniques to multiple monitors and dual projection screens, ensuring all students have a clear view of demonstrations.

Each classroom includes built-in cabinetry for convenient access to supplies, handwashing sinks, and drop-down or in-floor power outlets for student devices. Two large storage rooms house less frequently used equipment and mobile supply carts used by faculty. Sensitive equipment is securely stored in a locked cabinet or designated office, with additional overflow storage available through Plant Operations.

Students have 24/7 access to classrooms and labs for study and practice. The PT lobby offers comfortable seating and large tables for group work or casual gatherings. Private and small group study rooms are available throughout the building and can be reserved through PCOM Georgia's library. Individual study pods are also located in the building, each with a desk surface, power outlets and a study lamp.

Students have access to gender-specific locker rooms and showers. Although intended primarily for student use, the showers can also be utilized to teach transfers between the shower and wheelchair using real and simulated patients.

Physical therapy students have access to the Simulation Center to practice skills using standardized patients.

Students also utilize the cadaver lab to learn applied anatomy.

The DPT program’s location at PCOM Georgia gives students opportunities for interaction with other healthcare professionals. This helps to develop the collaborative approach needed to advise and consult with healthcare providers in the field.
