PCOM School of Pharmacy Launching Program for Incoming Students

June 3, 2025

Starting pharmacy school is exciting, but it can also be challenging. To help students make a smooth and successful transition, PCOM School of Pharmacy is introducing a new Pre-Matriculation Program (PreMP) in Summer 2025. The program is designed to give incoming Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students a strong academic and personal foundation鈥攈elping them feel prepared, supported, and connected before classes even start.

Two pharmacy students work in a lab.

This four-week program is open to both newly admitted students and those repeating their first year. Led by Dr. Avadhesh Sharma, Chair and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Dr. Shubha Kayarthodi, Senior Associate Director of Student Affairs, the PreMP will focus on building key cognitive and behavioral skills.

鈥淧COM School of Pharmacy has identified a need to better support incoming students in developing the academic and non-academic skills essential for success in the PharmD program,鈥 Sharma said.

The PreMP will feature structured, two-hour sessions held weekly on Wednesdays. Core topics include:

  • Time management and study skills development
  • Medical terminology
  • Foundational math for pharmaceutical calculations
  • Introductory organic chemistry to support molecular-level understanding of drug action

Beyond academics, the program introduces students to valuable campus resources and support systems鈥攕etting them up for long-term success in the PharmD program.

鈥淏y the end of the program, students will know what resources are available and how to make the most of them to succeed in the PharmD curriculum,鈥 Sharma added.
