EDWARD SHAW, PHD
Professor of Medical Microbiology and Immunology

Dr. Edward Shaw received his BS in Biology  from Georgia Southwestern State University. After receiving his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Health's Rocky Mountain Laboratories. He then spent four years as a microbiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta before taking a faculty position at Oklahoma State University.

During his 15 years on the faculty at OSU, Dr. Shaw taught biology, immunology and graduate level courses in emerging infectious diseases and bacterial pathogenic mechanisms. He also directed an active research group studying the molecular mechanisms of obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens such as chlamydia, rickettsia, and coxiella. These unusual organisms can cause sexually transmitted, tick-borne, and Q fever diseases, respectively. He used his research to train numerous doctoral, masters and undergraduate students about these unusual disease causing organisms.

In 2019, Dr. Shaw joined the faculty of PCOM South Georgia as an associate professor of medical microbiology and immunology. 

Dr. Shaw鈥檚 intellectual interests lie in how bacteria interact with humans and animals to cause disease, as well as mechanisms and methodologies of teaching medical microbiology that can provide students with an understanding of these ever changing organisms. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, grilling, hunting and watching his children's sporting events.
